When I was 22, I went to a therapist for this. I went to a county agency and they gave me an psych evaluation. It was low-priced because I was low income. I was very sad so they diagnosed me with depression and recommended weekly therapy. My phychologist was nice. She felt that I had deeper issues and wanted to dig into those, although I could talk about anything I wanted at the sessions. I stayed in therapy for a few months.
When I was 29, I again was feeling way too sad, and again had a bad crush that made my absolutely miserable. This time I went in and got evaluated again, and they decided to give me therapy for depression again and they put me on an antidepressant (Welbutrin). That medicine
changed my life. I never again felt as bad, and things like that have never hurt as much since then. The feelings were still there but they did not my life. The medicine still, to this day, makes me feel optimistic and pleasant all the time. A good antidepressant, if needed, can be used for short- or long-term and makes you have a whole different, more optimistic view of your life and problems. I can tell you more if you like.
Ps: have you ever read "The Rules" and "He's Just not that Into You" (the origianal self-help book). The Rules can be a great consolation.
